The First American Olympic hockey team made their debut at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium, and they were certainly a force to be reckoned with! Despite having limited ice time back home, the American team managed to secure the silver medal, narrowly losing out to Canada in the final.
One of the most memorable moments of the tournament came in the semi-final match against Sweden. The Americans found themselves down 3-2 with just a few minutes left on the clock. In a desperate attempt to tie the game, they pulled their goalie, but it backfired when the Swedes scored an empty-net goal to make it 4-2.
But the Americans weren't ready to give up just yet. With less than a minute left, they managed to score not one, but two goals to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the extra period, they scored the game-winning goal to secure their spot in the final.
It was an incredible display of grit and determination from a team that had only been playing together for a few months. And while they may not have taken home the gold, they certainly made their mark on Olympic hockey history.
