Tracing the Roots of Hockey Tape: From Ancient Egypt to the Modern Game

Posted by Hockey Joe on

Tape has been a crucial tool in everyday life for centuries. From its early beginnings in Ancient Egypt to its evolution into various forms and uses in modern times, tape has a rich and fascinating history.

The earliest form of tape can be traced back to Ancient Egypt where papyrus reeds were used to make paper. This paper was then used to wrap and secure objects. This was the earliest form of adhesive tape and was used for both functional and decorative purposes. The ancient Egyptians also developed a form of glue made from natural materials like beeswax and resin which was used to hold objects together.

In the late 19th century, the first true adhesive tape was invented by a Scottish surgeon named Alexander Parkes. He created a tape made from cellulose that was coated with a sticky substance called nitrocellulose. This tape was used primarily in the medical field to bind wounds.

In the early 20th century, American Richard Gurley Drew improved upon Parkes’ invention by creating a clear cellophane tape that was much more durable and versatile. This tape was marketed under the brand name Scotch Tape and quickly became popular for a variety of uses, from sealing envelopes to repairing torn clothing.

The 1950s and 60s saw the development of new types of tape, including masking tape, electrical tape, and duct tape. Masking tape was created for use in the paint and auto body industries, while electrical tape was designed for use in the electrical and electronics industries. Duct tape, which was originally created for use in the military, quickly became popular for a variety of household uses.

Cloth tape, also known as fabric tape, was introduced in the 1970s. This type of tape is made of a fabric backing covered with a strong adhesive. It is used in a variety of applications, including the construction industry, where it is used to secure insulation, and the fashion industry, where it is used in dressmaking and tailoring. The NHL first started using cloth tape for stick blades in the 1970s, and it changed the game by allowing players to better grip the puck and make more precise shots.

Tape has also been widely used in sports for various purposes. In football, for example, tape is used to protect players' hands and fingers from injury. In basketball, tape is used to secure ankle braces and support knees. In hockey, as mentioned, cloth tape is widely used on stick blades to improve grip and control.

In the late 20th century, the development of new materials and technologies led to the creation of even more advanced tapes, including double-sided tape, medical tape, and industrial-strength tapes. Today, tape is used in a wide variety of industries, from construction and manufacturing to fashion and art, as well as in sports.

In conclusion, tape has a long and fascinating history that has seen it evolve from a simple adhesive in Ancient Egypt to the versatile and essential tool that it is today. Whether it’s used for practical purposes, creative expression, or to enhance performance in sports, tape has become an indispensable part of our lives.
